Lockdown has immerged as one of the best in the arsenal of mankind to continue the fight with COVID19. Most of the aspects of lockdown are negative in India but there are some positive impacts which deserve your attention. This does not mean that we should let our guard down, that will only result in more casualties. Lockdown has contributed to the environment; here are some of the benefits of lockdown in India.

Less infection spread rate



India leads in the fight against COVID19, speaking of the first 12 days of the pandemic when the number of cases in India went from 100 to about 1000 while in other countries the rising slope was more steep form 100 to 3,500 and  8,000. India was successful in maintaining the infection rate to minimal by the practice of social distancing and sanitization. About a billion people stayed at home and continued the fight against the coronavirus. This practice has shown result in the present with less number of infected people in a highly populated country like India.

The quality of water in River Ganga in Haridwar and Varanasi has improved by 40 to 50 % from March 24 and marine life is now visible. Due to lockdown, all the industries in the vicinity are closed and not dumping any pollutants in the river, all the people who use to worship and take bath in the river is no more present to pollute the river.

India’s capital Delhi which has always been in the news for its polluted air has succeeded to break the chain, The clear sky in the morning and stars twinkling at night are the clear indications, according to the latest report the average concentration of the PM (Particulate matter) 2.5 in New Delhi came down by 71% for a week last month and then continued at 68%. The major pollutant from the industries Nitrogen dioxide has also witnessed a decline of 71%.

The quality of water in river Yamuna in south Delhi Kalindi Kunj has also improved by 20 to 25% from March 26 due to lockdown, but sadly there are fewer traces of marine life in the water. There is no pollution from the industrial and temple side but the foam continues to form in the river due to disposing of household waste in the river.
